Jamie Karek is a founding partner of CLG. She has been representing injured workers for more than a decade. As a former labor union member and the first in her family to go to college, she has seen first-hand the relationship between employer and employee and is dedicated to protecting workers’ rights. She is passionate about improving Virginia’s workers’ compensation system through legislative reform and case law.
Her legal practice focuses on workers’ compensation cases. Jamie has represented hundreds of claimants before the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission, from settlements to hearings to appeals. She has also argued a number of cases before the Court of Appeals of Virginia. In addition, Jamie has experience representing various labor unions in arbitration proceedings against employers who have engaged in unfair labor practices. She has also represented workers in unemployment cases before the Virginia Employment Commission on a pro bono basis through the Legal Aid Justice Center.
“Since I was 16 years old, I’ve always worked ― sometimes I’ve had two or three jobs at once,” she said. “I’m drawn to workers’ comp law because I get to help people every day. I enjoy the challenge of providing clients with the best possible legal representation. It’s a great feeling when you win a hearing and then get to place that phone call to a client saying, ‘good news – we won your case!’ ”
Jamie enjoys performing the many aspects of her job including maintaining close contact with clients, conducting discovery and depositions, researching complex legal issues, writing briefs, representing clients at hearings, arguing appeals and settling cases.
“My strong attention to detail comes in handy when I’m going through mountains of pages of medical records or discovery documents,” she said. “I’m sometimes searching for one specific notation or e-mail that could turn a case in our favor. Sometimes, it’s something that has been overlooked, and when we find it, it’s exciting.”
After graduating from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, Jamie earned a Master’s degree in psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She then earned her Juris Doctorate from the University of Richmond’s T.C. Williams School of Law. While there, she worked on the Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest and was honored with the Virginia AFL-CIO Workers’ Rights Scholarship as well as the Public Interest Law Association’s Pro Bono Award. She also served as Fundraising Chair for her law fraternity, Phi Alpha Delta. Jamie She has been honored for four consecutive years by being named to the Virginia Rising Stars list by Super Lawyers magazine in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.
